Melody Ge Sr. Quality Assurance Manager

Melody Ge is an enthusiastic professional passionate about food safety and quality. Melody holds a Master’s degree in Food Science from University of Maryland, College Park; a Bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Technology from Shanghai Ocean University. She has experience and knowledge in scheme owner; regulations retailers, and manufacturers including products such as milk, meat, ingredients, confectionary, and pasta.

Melody’s Master research focused on the development, production and quality control of a vegan “chicken meat” product, which is currently marketed by Beyond Meat and is available at Whole Foods in the Washington, DC area. While celebrating this exciting achievement in her early career, Melody has committed herself to contributing to food safety and quality because she believes which are the foundation of the food industry. Hence, Melody became the Compliance Specialist at SQF Institute, where she established and developed the SQFI Compliance Program. She oversees SQF certified suppliers, CBs, SQF auditors; assisting suppliers interpreting SQF Code, maintaining the integrity of the SQF certification and developing the SQF Code.

Currently, Melody works as a Sr. Quality Assurance Manager, serves as deputy QA director, at Lidl US. She oversees Lidl suppliers and product quality development. Utilizing her multi industry backgrounds, Melody also is in charge of the Lidl Purchasing Cooperate Social Responsibility (CSR). Melody’s primary responsibilities include training Lidl auditors, managing Lidl stakeholders, in charge of R&D and sensory for Lidl private brands, and maintaining relationships with Lidl CBs and labs. Melody is committed to always provide Lidl consumers the highest quality products with the best sustainability.

Melody often speaks at conferences to help more people understand the importance of food safety and quality. In spare time, Melody practices ballet and yoga. She also enjoys diving in the ocean. Melody is a certified Yoga instructor and a certified open water diver

Eva Lauve Food Safety and Scheduling Manager

Eva Lauve is currently in her thirty-ninth year at Stemilt. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Bachelor of Science in International Finance from Central Washington University, and began working at the company while still attending college.

Her work as a sorter, line supervisor, packed fruit quality control, production manager, and food safety manager gives her a foundation and understanding of all aspects of food quality and safety from the ground up.

She is currently Stemilt’s Food Safety and Scheduling Manager and SQF Consultant, and developed the company’s Food Safety program from its inception, both in the field, in the early 2000’s and at the warehouse level in the late 1990’s. Eva is passionate for packing and delivering a safe, quality product to Stemilt’s world-wide customers and is constantly researching the newest techniques to improve and enhance the Stemilt program.

She serves on many industry committees and boards including:

- Northwest Horticulture Food Safety Committee

- Alchemy Advisory Board

- SQF Technical Committee

- United GAP Harmonization Committee and

- GFSI Auditor Competency

Most recently, Eva has participated in committees and working groups to help educate the United States FDA on the impact of the upcoming FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) law to the US fresh produce industry.

Eva is regarded as an expert in the fresh produce food safety industry and is sought out at the national and international levels to speak at conferences such as the Australian HACCP conference, United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Convention, the SQF Annual Conference, and the Food Safety Summit in Washington, DC. She was recognized in 2010 by the Washington State Horticulture for Industry Service.

GARY SMITH Director of Food Safety Systems Eurofins Scientific

With an MS in Environmental Biology from Governors State University and a BS in Animal Sciences from the University of Illinois, Gary brings over 20 years of industry experience to his duties at Eurofins Food Safety Systems. He helps food processors, distributors, and packagers of all sizes navigate the

complexities of achieving compliance with the latest food standards,

creating value beyond certification. In addition, he oversees all aspects of the supply chain business, including vendor, GMP, GLP, and Warehouse/Distribution auditing services and certifications, and all SQF, FAMI-QS/ISFSF, and domestic SFSF work.

Gary has worked as a regulator, buyer, supplier, trainer, auditor, head of a

certification body, and head of a standard owner. With industry experience in

produce, meat, bakeries, dairy, warehousing, distribution, packaging,

beverage, and confectionary, this broad perspective means Gary is uniquely equipped to help organizations determine which standards offer the best benefits to their business and their most practical strategies for complying with them.

A LEADER IN FOOD SAFETY AND SERVICE

Gary has an extensive list of professional certifications and industry memberships and has been active on a number of policy influencing committees. He currently serves as: Chair of the Food Safety Service

Providers (FSSP), a member of the Accreditation task force and Guidance document working group, a member of the GFSI, and as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee for SQFI. Previous committee work includes a Council III member-ship with the Conference for Food Protection. Other key recognitions, certifications and industry memberships include:

• The inaugural SQF Institute Distinguished Service Award, which recognized Gary’s life-long commitment to promoting and strengthening food safety and certification programs worldwide.

• Certified Quality Auditor for HACCP under the American Society of Quality

• Certified HACCP Instructor with the International HACCP Alliance and National Seafood Alliance

• Registered Sanitarian and food safety auditor credentialing subject matter expert with the National Environmental Health Association and the State of Missouri

• Certified Auditor for AWAP animal welfare program for the Food Marketing Institute/NCCR audit program

• Member, International Association of Food Protection

• Member, National Environmental Health Association

Prior to joining Eurofins Gary served as the Director of Training, Improvement Solutions & Food Safety at SAI-Global, Vice-President of Supply Chain Consulting at Steritech and Technical Director for the Safe Quality Food Institute (SQFI).
